An automotive chemical additive manufacturer was interested in simplifying an automotive service maintenance process that was regularly performed by automotive service repair professionals. The common procedure required that the service cleaning chemical be administered to the engine using a specialized piece of service equipment. The client wanted to dispense with equipment and if the process could be significantly simplified it would provide the opportunity to expand the sale of this engine cleaning chemical to the automotive do-it-yourself enthusiast market.
Working with automotive technicians and aerosol packaging specialists in the company I was able to get an understanding of what the cleaning chemical did and why the service equipment was necessary. This information proved valuable as we entered the design phase of the specialized actuator and aerosol cap. Everything tat was necessary was designed into the aerosol cap, a newly patented channel style cap where unique specialized actuators could be stored.

The solution met all design requirements of the client. Not only was the objective of simplifying the process for the automotive service professional the product also provided the opportunity to develop a version of the product for the do-it-yourself automotive service enthusiast market. In addition, the program could also be packaged in a variety of different configuration for the professional service market in order to provide a broad range of marketing options and deliver the same product in multiple ways to competing customers. Lastly, the development of the channel cap with specialty actuators moved the client into an innovator classification in the eyes of its customers.
