Project Outline:
Develop a product that enables a technician to administer an air intake cleaner into an engine without the use of special equipment and the need to dismantle the air intake system. New vehicles has a device that prevents a vehicle’s engine from starting should any component of the air intake system not be connected and fully sealed. The product program must be suitable for the older and more traditional throttle body fuel management system, the common multi-point fuel injection system and also be applicable to the newest fuel system technology – Direct Injection. Each of the different fuel management systems require a different air intake and valve cleaning formulation.
Project Outcome:
For best results the different air intake and valve cleaning formulas are to be introduced into the engine under pressure. An effective solution to this was to package the formulations into an aerosol can. To simplify the application it was found that the chemical could be effectively administered into an engine intake system if a small 1/8″ hole was drilled anywhere into the plastic air intake housing located between the air filter and the throttle body assembly. The extension tube when attached to the actuator allowed the technician to direct the spray into the air intake tube and the plug provided the method to resealing the air intake tube once the service was completed.
As a result a new cap design was developed that integrated the extension tube and the plug into the top of the cap. This package provided the opportunity to develop a series of new products for the automotive market for both the professional and Do-it-Yourself service repair markets.
