AEROSOL STEP CAP DESIGN

Executive on Demand Position:

President, Chief Operating Officer, Vice President Research and Development, Vice President Sales and Marketing, Vice President Logistics, General Manager, Vice President Production

Project Outline:

Create new features to help an aerosol filling company achieve the following objectives:

1) Create differentiation for finished product on the retail shelf. The greater the number of variations the greater the success at satisfying current customer needs as well as the opportunity to attract new customers from competitors

2) Enhance productivity on the filling line

3) Lower transportation costs

Project Outcome:

The successful development and market implementation of the aerosol channel cap identified a market opportunity to enhance a corporate identification and brand position in the market place. It presented a niche opportunity to drive interest into for capturing new sales for packaged aerosol products due to the unique offering look(s) available outside of the standard aerosol over-cap. The results of the project are as follows:

1) Differentiation was created by a developing a variety of unique approaches to changing how a cap looks, its functionality and its ability to communicate a message:

  • Design and make cap styles to look like fasteners (hex or bolt head, flat screw head) and a derby
  • Design and make cap styles with a step feature to deliver a new look
  • Design and make a 65mm cap fit the conetop style plastic bottle by having an inner collar that can be attached to the child proof sealer cap
  • Design and make a 52mm and 65mm aerosol cap with a slot to store an extension tube for the current traditional cap as well as the new designs
  • Deliver an affordable four colour printing process on any style cap to serve as a billboard

2) The development of aerosol caps with a slot to store an extension tube provided an opportunity to enhance the productivity on the aerosol filling line. The equipment taping the extension tube to the can during the filling process was designed to work at a speed of 60 cans per minute while the filling line and caper machine could work together at a speed of 120 cans per minute

2) Lower transportation costs were achieved as the step cap design could store an additional 40% more caps in a shipping container than the traditional style cap. In addition any printing or the installation of an extension tube in the cap channel could be produced and shipped a no additional costs.
